Recycling Computers in Saskatchewan: Why It Matters

Thirty years ago, most computers weren’t recycled. Old desktops and laptops were often stored away—or ended up in the landfill. Today, we understand much more about the environmental impact of electronic waste, and the importance of handling old technology responsibly.
At Computers for Schools+ Saskatchewan, recycling computers is an important part of how we reduce e-waste, protect the environment, and support our communities across the province.
Why E-Waste Matters
Computers and other electronics contain materials that don’t belong in landfills. When they’re thrown away, they can release harmful substances into the soil and water. At the same time, many computer components still have value and can be reused or recycled when managed properly.
Today, many businesses replace their computers every three to five years. That leads to a simple but important question: what happens to the old ones? Making the right choice keeps harmful waste out of landfills and helps protect our environment.
What Happens When You Donate a Computer
Anyone can bring a computer to CFS+ SK. Businesses, schools, nonprofits, and individuals across Saskatchewan all play a role in reducing e-waste.
When equipment arrives, our team carefully reviews it:
· If it can be reused, we refurbish it so it can support learning, job searching, and digital access in the community.
· If it can’t be reused, we responsibly recycle the parts through approved recycling partners.
Before anything is reused or recycled, all hard drives are securely erased. Protecting privacy and data security is essential, and we take that responsibility seriously.
The Environmental Impact Adds Up
Last year alone, CFS+ SK recycled approximately 12 pallets of equipment, keeping an estimated 19738 pounds of electronic waste out of Saskatchewan landfills. That impact is made possible by people and organizations choosing to recycle their technology responsibly.
This recycling work isn’t a revenue stream for us. We aren’t paid for recycling equipment, and shipping is free. We do this work because it’s the right thing to do—for our communities today and for the environment we all share.
Keeping the Conversation Going
As technology continues to change, the need to talk about e-waste doesn’t go away. Every computer kept out of a landfill is a step toward a healthier environment and a more sustainable future.
If you have old equipment sitting unused, we invite you to bring it in. Together, we can reduce e-waste, protect privacy, and support a greener Saskatchewan.
Have computers or equipment to donate? Bring them to CFS+ SK and help keep e-waste out of our landfills.
